I have done a review of GU Energy Gels before but GU Roctane energy gels are something different. The company markets them as an energy gel for people that participate in ultra-endurance sports. Sports in which you are performing at your peak levels for an incredibly long duration or are doing very intense activities.
The way the company puts it, GU Roctane Energy Gels are the more “amped” up versions of the original GU Energy Gels. The Roctane versions contain more amino acids, more sodium, and caffeine.
I will be doing a short review of this because Roctane is the same as GU Energy Gel (you can check my review for it here).
But I will be going over the pros and cons of Roctane and where it is worth spending the extra money to get more performance out of your body when you are doing these intense activities.
Let’s jump right into it.
- Super easy to squeeze out of the packet and eat
- Smooth texture
- The chocolate flavor is amazing
- Energy gel starts to kick in within just 5 minutes
- You will experience high energy levels for at least an hour after consuming 1 whole packet
- The packet is small and compact and you can store it anywhere you want
- Compared to Clif Shot Cherry Chocolate, GU Roctane had less caffeine (100mg vs 35mg of caffeine). I think if it had more caffeine the energy levels would sustain for a longer time.
Now that you have the pros and cons to make a quick decision, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of it.
The GU Roctane Energy Gels come in small packets that are easy to tear off and eat the energy gels. You can just tear off the top end of the packet and eat the whole thing.
The best part about this gel (this is the main reason why I like GU Energy Gels) is that their gels are smooth in texture. It almost feels like you are eating a toothpaste that tastes incredible and gives you an instant boost of energy.
Just make sure that you drink a couple of swigs of water to make sure that you can swallow the whole packet easily. Or you will be chewing the gel a lot and you don’t want to do that. You want it to be inside your stomach as soon as possible so the digestion process starts quickly.
Now, talking about flavors, just like their normal GU Energy Gels, the Roctane also comes in multiple flavors. 8 different flavors to be exact.
GU Roctane Energy Gel 8 Flavors
Keep in mind that all of these flavors contain caffeine, unlike the regular GU energy gels.
- Chai latte
- Pomegranate blueberry
- Vanilla orange
- Cherry lime
- Sea salt chocolate (my favorite)
- Tutti frutti
- Cold-brew coffee
- Coconut chocolate
How Long Does It Take For the Energy to Wear Off?
This is the main thing that most athletes are interested in. They want to know how long they would be able to sustain peak energy levels after consuming these energy gels. The longer they can do that, the better it will be.
With GU Roctane Energy Gels, you will be able to sustain energy levels for up to 1 hour after consuming 1 packet. This is the longest time I’ve experienced peak energy gels after consuming an energy gel. Most energy gels only provide you with high energy for the next 30-45 minutes and then you have to eat another one to keep going.
And it makes sense why Roctane can provide higher energy for a longer duration – it doesn’t just contain more caffeine. It also has more amino acids and sodium. 3 times as much compared to the original GU Energy Gel.
Another thing I have to mention about any GU energy gel is that they contain slower digesting carbohydrates like maltodextrin. Almost 70-80% of the energy gels are made up of that. And because it digests slower compared to fructose and other carbohydrates, your body will have a consistent source of energy that it can tap into for the next hour.
Are GU Roctane Energy Gels Good For You?
If you are an ultra-endurance athlete – someone who runs marathons or participates in multi-day cycling events where you are cycling from one city to another, then GU Roctane Energy Gels are good for you.
If you are someone who does weightlifting and running just to make sure that you have a good amount of muscle mass and a have good cardiovascular health, then you do not need to use any energy gels. You should focus on optimizing your diet to make sure that you always feel as energetic as possible.
Remember, energy gels are only the cherry on top. That too only when you are participating in events where you do those intense activities with other people and try to beat them.
What is the difference between GU and Roctane?
GU Roctane contains more branch-chained amino acids, sodium, caffeine, beta-alanine, and taurine than the original GU Energy Gels. In fact, the original GU energy gels do not contain any caffeine and also have 3x lower amounts of amino acids and sodium.
Can you mix GU energy gel with water?
You can drink water while eating the gel to make it easier for you to swallow and digest.
How much water should you drink for that? It depends on the heat and what kind of activity you are doing, but I would recommend drinking 14 or more ounces of water.
Remember, you want to make sure that it doesn’t make you feel full or bloated. So drink as much water as you can until your stomach starts to feel heavy. You want to stop drinking right before that.
