My Experience Using Spring Energy’s Gels:
Spring Energy has been taking the half marathon and full marathon scene by storm. A couple years ago, you wouldn’t even know that this company existed. But now, it feels like everyone is using Spring Energy to fuel their marathon runs. It has become the Nike and Puma of the marathon energy gel products.
It does make sense why they have taken over the energy gel niche by storm. Most natural gels you find out there just don’t feel like they are providing you any energy at all. I have tried a bunch of 100-calorie gels and almost all of them feel like the air inside a Lays potato chip packet.
I asked a couple friends who used Spring Energy and they were fans of it. So I had to give it a shot and see what all the fuss is about.
The first thing I noticed is that rice is their first ingredient. That’s an immediate red flag in my opinion because rice sits heavy in the stomach. So I wasn’t sure how my body would respond to that while I’m running.
The gels are viscous which was to be expected. It is good because when you are in a long run, you don’t want to fidget around or worry about dropping your food and whatnot. You just open it and consume and focus on your run. So if you are looking for something as simple as that, Spring Energy has got you covered.
The good thing about them is that they do focus on electrolytes and salt. Every get has at least 100mg of sea salt to make sure you don’t cramp in the middle of your run. This helps tremendously if you are running in a dry or hot climate. And if you have a humid climate where you live, don’t even think about not carrying any electrolytes. You’ll need it more than anything because humidity causes you to sweat more.
Incredible Turnaround Time
This blew me away. All the energy gels I’ve tried before, I always ended up burping or feeling low energy for a couple minutes until my stomach was able to digest it and start using the calories as energy. So, digestion took more time for other energy gels.
For Spring Energy, I didn’t feel low at all! The turnaround time was almost instant which was incredible. That’s exactly what I was looking for. That’s when I realized why my fellow runners were fans of these gels.
Honestly, if you don’t believe how quickly this thing gives you energy, you have to try it out. It isn’t expensive either. At $30 for 10 gels, one pack will set you up for a half marathon. Heck, I don’t think you’ll even need to consume all 10 gels.
Yes, I know $30 is more expensive when you compare it with other gels available on the market. But I don’t think any of those gels will provide you with a better turnaround time than this one. I honestly think that’s their selling point.
If the turnaround time wasn’t good, or if it was the same as other brands, I would go for the ones that offer the lowest price. But when you need instant energy while running long distances, these gels will get you the results you are looking for.
Energy duration is something I do take note of because I want to see how long can I run before I will need to consume another gel. The longer this duration is, the better because then I’ll know that I am consuming more energy in a very short amount of time.
Not just that, I also won’t need to consume as many gels through my marathon run.
With Spring Energy gels, I noticed that the energy spike lasts for about 30-minutes without dragging. I was able to focus on run the whole time with no cloudiness.
I’d recommend going for the Wholesome Peanut Butter. This flavor is thicker than others and so you can kinda chew it. I like to chew anything I eat so this was perfect for me.
Besides that, I’ll be honest, this wasn’t the best tasting gel. It wasn’t too sweet which is good but it was close to how the natural ingredients in it would taste. So if you are someone who likes the taste of natural ingredients, this flavor would be great for you.
One thing you should note however, is that there will be a slight aftertaste after you consume it. I think that will be the case with every flavor they have. But it will go away in about 10 minutes so its not a big deal.
Is It Gluten Free or Vegan?
No and no. This is also not organic.
There are vegan options available. They might be a bit more expensive than the non-vegan ones though FYI.
Each gel will give you 110-calories.
